This made-from-scratch brown gravy using home canned French onion soup is an easy and delicious addition to your meal.
Last fall I bought a bulk bag of onions from a market to make home canned French onion soup. I decided to use it to make a gravy for our mashed potatoes. Oh goodness was that ever the best thing!
I used to buy the brown gravy packet, but we have been slowly moving towards making as much as possible from scratch.
Here is what you’ll need
- 1/4 c flour
- 1 pint home canned French onion soup
- whisk
How-To Instructions
pour the French onion soup and flour into a small saucepan
Turn the heat to medium/low whisking to incorporate as much of the flour as possible to remove the lumps. For a brown mushroom gravy, we add a jar of home canned mushrooms at this point. Store bought canned mushrooms will work also. If using fresh mushrooms, you’ll want to cook them first to soften and release some of the liquid it’s going to make when cooked.
Slowly heat the soup and flour mixture
Slowly heat the mixture and bring it to a simmer. It will start to thicken. If it thickens too much, you can add a bit of water until it’s to the consistency of your liking. This will only take a few minutes so keep an eye on it so it doesn’t burn and stick to the bottom of your pot.
Remove the gravy from heat when thickened
This gravy has a lot of flavor with all it’s seasonings and onions from being canned as onion soup. All you’re doing is using flour to thicken it. It is delicious served over meatloaf, and mashed potatoes as seen in the photo.
If you have leftovers, let it cool then store in a glass mason jar for 3-4 days in the fridge. You can also freeze the gravy in a freezer bag or container for up to 3 months. Just thaw and heat.
I have not tried this using a store bought can of French onion soup since we are trying to make from scratch as much as possible. This is an easy, delicious gravy made from scratch where you control the ingredients. Enjoy!
